{"id":34383,"date":"2025-07-10T12:18:34","date_gmt":"2025-07-10T10:18:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thema-med.com\/?p=34383"},"modified":"2025-07-10T14:01:49","modified_gmt":"2025-07-10T12:01:49","slug":"who-is-responsible-for-affixing-the-udi-code-on-medical-devices-labels-and-packaging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thema-med.com\/en\/2025\/07\/10\/who-is-responsible-for-affixing-the-udi-code-on-medical-devices-labels-and-packaging\/","title":{"rendered":"Who is responsible for affixing the UDI code on medical devices, labels and packaging?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to MDR (EU) 2017\/745 and IVDR (EU) 2017\/746, the <strong>manufacturer <\/strong>is the entity responsible for the entire UDI management process for each medical device placed on the European market.<\/p>\n<p>The manufacturer has the following responsibilities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Assignment of the UDI and Basic UDI-DI<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Registration of the UDI and the Basic UDI-DI in the European database EUDAMED<\/strong>,<\/li>\n<li><strong>Applying<\/strong> <strong>the U<\/strong><strong>DI carrier<\/strong> on all packaging levels and, in the case of reusable devices, directly on the device by direct marking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Any <strong>distributor, importer or other natural or legal person<\/strong> who assumes the obligations incumbent on manufacturers, under Article 16(1), will also assume all obligations relating to UDI, including proper labelling.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, should a distributor or importer perform operations such as the translation or repackaging of devices, activities described in Article 16(3), it must ensure that these procedures are carried out in such a way that the readability of the UDI medium and the information identifying the device are never compromised.
