This means that the <strong>UK will completely leave the EU on December 31, 2020<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-15041\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thema-med.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/brexit-EU-1024x509.jpg\" alt=\"Brexit no extension of the transition period big ben\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brexit transition period update: the UK decision<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, met by videoconference Charles Michel, President of the European Council, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission and David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, to take stock of the situation on the progress made so far in the negotiations on future relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union and to define the next actions to be taken.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The meeting revealed that the <strong>United Kingdom has decided not to request any extension of the transition period<\/strong> <strong>which will therefore end on 31 December 2020<\/strong>, as set out in the provisions of the withdrawal agreement.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BREXIT: what will happen in the next months?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The decision not to extend the transition period brings <strong>greater pressure on the negotiations<\/strong>, in particular on Michel Barnier, chief European negotiator, who will have to step up negotiations on future economic and trade relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union in the coming weeks.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Despite the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, four rounds of negotiations have been completed so far.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>Negotiations on future relations between the UK and the EU will continue in the next months<\/strong>, although it is likely that an agreement cannot be finalized before the end of 2020.
