So\nfar, the medical device industry either absorbed the costs or passed them along\nto customers. However, small medical companies are the first to feel the \u201cpain\u201d\nof Trump\u2019s tariffs, since they cannot afford to do so.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thema-med.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/1-trump-agains-china-tariffs-war-medical-devices-october-2019-1024x536.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13321\"\/><figcaption><em>Trump\u2019s \u201ctariffs war\u201d: U.S. medical device industry still threatened, despite recent exemptions <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>No sooner the \u201ctariffs war\u201d started to escalate,\nthe USTR initiated the process that allowed companies to apply for an <strong>exemption\nfrom duties<\/strong> on any products not readily available on the United States\nmarket. As far as the U.S. medical device industry is concerned, much of the\nimpact of President Trump\u2019s tariffs has been placed on <strong>component parts made\nin China<\/strong> employed in the production of medical devices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mid-September 2019, the USTR unveiled that medtech-related products were on two out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2019\/09\/20\/2019-20441\/notice-of-product-exclusions-chinas-acts-policies-and-practices-related-to-technology-transfer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (si apre in una nuova scheda)\">three lists of products exempted from tariffs on China<\/a>. Among the exempted products we cite: anesthesia masks, certain component parts used to make magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-ray equipment. However, the exemptions in many cases do not match the expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Early October 2019, Trump announced the United States and China were close to completing a \u201cphase one\u201d trade agreement. Nonetheless, until a final more comprehensive deal is reached, tariffs that Trump has already imposed on over $350 billion worth of Chinese goods will remain in place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Published on
