Following two fruitful meetings on the topic, the Medical Device Coordination Group (MDCG) task force has identified the Italian national classification system of Medical Devices as being the most adequate nomenclature system for the implementation of the future European Database for Medical Devices (EUDAMED).

EUROPEAN UNION: Italian CND chosen as basis for the future EUDAMED nomenclatureU

As such, the CND (Classificazione Nazionale dei Dispositivi medici) codes currently used for registration of Medical Devices in the Italian database  will be mapped to Global Medical Device Nomenclature (GMDN) and provided free of charge to all stakeholders utilizing EUDAMED, in accordance with Art. 26 of MDR (EU) 2017/745 and Art. 23 of IVDR (EU) 2017/746.

The Italian CND has been up-and-running since 2007. In the months to come, a sub-group of the MDCG will be established and entrusted with mapping the Italian CND to GMDN, in support of EUDAMED.

Good news for the Italian economic operators: they will be the ones to spend the least efforts to adapt to the new European nomenclature!
